HINDRANCES TO FAITH: A Bad Conscience

Anchor Scripture: Hebrews 11: 6
"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

Focus Scripture: "Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:" - 1 Timothy 1: 19

Welcome to a new series with the Holy Spirit; HINDRANCES TO FAITH. I pray that God will again enlighten our hearts of understanding in His Word with this series in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

The subject of faith is a very popular and almost over-flogged one amongst Christians all over the world. While its importance has been stressed over and over again, it must be said that as a ministry, we don't just emphasize the importance of faith, but mostly what to do to strengthen our faith because without it, FINISHING STRONG could be very impossible as rightly said in Hebrews 11: 6, our anchor Scripture for this week. We are trusting the Holy Spirit of God to teach us as always, again, in Jesus Christ's mighty name. Amen.

I believe we would remember that the Holy Spirit has taught us about having a pure heart, under the LIVING IN HIS PRESENCE series. Then, the Holy spirit mentioned that the heart is a very important organ because from it comes all the thoughts that determine our actions which are what people see to determine whether we are truly children of God. However, the operational searchlight within the heart that gauges whether we did right or wrong is the conscience.
"the operational searchlight within the heart that gauges whether we did right or wrong is the conscience."
In our Focus Scripture this morning, the Bible speaks of "faith and a good conscience", which really suggests the existence of people with "bad consciences". In Roman 1: 18, the Bible speaks of some men who hold the truth in unrighteousness. These definitely are men who claim to have faith but have no good conscience.

You may wonder how anyone could have faith without a good conscience. Beloved brethren, I tell you the truth, it happens. This is possible amongst Christians who believe in self-righteousness or righteousness according to the law. They are men who exalt their church doctrines above the commandments of God because the found refuge in them to cover their unrighteousness. They are the ones who see others as unfit because they neither believe nor practice what is popular in their denomination. These are men who would do wrong things but still go ahead to justify their wrong deeds by saying that their conscience doesn't blame them. But the bible says in 1 John 3: 20 that "God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things." The Bible says of people like this, "Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;" (1 Timothy 4: 2)

Faith and a good conscience are like siamese twins; inseparable. It is really absurd for anyone to have faith without a good conscience, but as explained above, it is not impossible (2 Corinthians 11: 14). For us to have a good conscience, our conscience must operate within the Holy Spirit of God (Romans 8: 14; 9: 1). And this will only be possible when we are genuinely born-again because it is the blood of Jesus Christ that will purge our hearts of the dead works of the law (Hebrews 9: 14), the major causes of bad consciences because the Bible says that "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8: 2)
"For us to have a good conscience, our conscience must operate within the Holy Spirit of God."
As we round off this morning, our Focus Scripture makes it very clear that without a good conscience, which must necessarily not only be to God, but to our fellow humans as well, our faith would be shipwrecked. This is because aside the fact that we are admonished to be good to all men (Galatians 6: 10) and that we can't love God if we don't love our fellow men (1 John 4: 20). That means we wouldn't be able to FINISH STRONG because our faith which determines whether we would see God or not would have become useless before God. I pray this will not be our testimonies in Jesus' Name. Amen.
